What is NYLUG.org
NYLUG.org is the New York's Linux Users Group supporting
all things Linux and Open Source in the greater New York area.
Members are Linux enthusiasts who come to the meetings and installfests,
subscribe to a mailing list, and/or participate in keysignings and other NYLUG events.
Meetings are free and open to the public (RSVP usually required).
Meetings will usually (but not always) take place
every second Wednesday of the month starting at 6:30pm.
Meetings are announced on the NYLUG-Announce
mailing list as soon as they are scheduled. All meetings are free and open to the public,
but you should put yourself on the RSVP list for your convenience
and ours.
Our Python Workshop takes place every other Tuesday at the NY Public Library, Hudson Park Branch.
You can see the schedule here by checking its calendar.
Please, feel free to contact us at info@nylug.org,
if you have any questions about NYLUG.org.
What is Linux?
Linux is an independent POSIX implementation of the UNIX operating system
and licensed under the terms of the
General Public license. It includes true
multitasking, true multiuser capabilities, virtual memory,
shared libraries, demand loading, proper memory management, TCP/IP networking,
copy-on-write executables, and other features consistent with Unix-type systems...

Linux FAQ.
What is Stammtisch?
It's a Bavarian idiom, roughly translating to ``A table for the
regulars,'' meaning a periodic gathering of people, involving beer. In
Southern Germany many bars have plaques on select tables indicating
that, for instance, every Thursday night the graduating class of 1969
from school xyz comes to the bar, and that is their table, thus no one
feels wronged if they are evicted from the table. It's a way of
welcoming regulars.
Therefore, appropriate a good concept, add Linux, Unix (*nix), free
software, open source software into the mix and you have a typical post
Linux/*nix user group activity, with a funny name. For further
information google for ``Linuxstammtische'', and/or visit http://electriclichen.com/linuxbierwanderung.
What is Swag?
Swag is a common name for the free cd-roms, t-shirts, bumpers stickers, fliers,
magazines, pins, necklaces and other general paraphrenalia that may be given away. NYLUG,
on a somewhat seasonal basis, obtains linux swag to offer to its members during the general
meeting. In addition, if a speaker is promoting a book, they may also offer a free copy or
two to meeting attendees.
