Note: I vaguely remember that I may have gratuitously broken the
calling convention for the number of log entries to be read in
read_log. I didn't think it was obvious that calling it with None
would indicate reading all log files, so I replaced it with a just as
un-obvious convention of 0 and forgot to revert it.
