You might want to check out mini-itx.com or logicsupply.com for tiny 
low-power PC-type machines.

Ive been very interested in NAS-like devices for years for exactly the 
same purposes and reasons. Ive yet to find anything that adequately 
combines cheapness, with hackability and RAIDed hot swap drive bays. The 
ideal device would allow me to load my distro of choice, drop in some 
cheap big hard-drives that are RAIDed and be cheaper than $500.

The new HP Media Vault is pretty close but I dont know how hackable it is 
(it actually has some sort of Linux system on it):

At $299 for 500Gb, I might get one just to hack.
