As a guy who has spent much time digging through huge and hairy build
rules for all sorts of mumbo-jumbo apps, I've seen Redhat and Novell
spend money on much of the unglamorous work. Who bothers to fuss with
OOo build rules ? They do. Who forked sun's java the moment it was gpl ?
They do. Who spends money on NPTL and kernel schedulers ? They do.
I think I can safely say, Redhat has had the biggest impact on FLOSS. If
there was ever a company that believed in FLOSS, it would be them.
(I'm going to admit, my verdict is out on Novell/SUSE. I am not happy
with their agreement with Microsoft, and quite frankly I believe they
need to fire their idiot Ximian/Mono developers ASAP.)
