[nylug-talk] Recommendations for encrypted tape drive(s)?

The LTO4 tape drives have the integrated hardware encryption. The ones
from IBM and HP have this feature. But the backup software that you
use has to also provide the ability to enable the hardware encryption
feature of the tape drive, as far as I know currently only Veritas
Backup Exec supports this feature...haven't obtained any updates from
any other software provider though I believe there might be others.
I mentioned IBM and HP because I know for a fact that they have these
drives with the feature but other companies like Dell might also have
them but I can't confirm at this moment.
You could contact HP support and request the information on the LTO4
tape drives and they will be able to provide it to you. I don't know
about other companies though. :)
Other than the LTO4 tape drives I am not aware of any other drives
that have this feature built in to the drive but I know that there are
some devices that can do the hardware encryption and sit between the
tape drive and the server and do the encryption of the data that is
being sent to the tape drive. I haven't had a good experience with
these systems though I've spoken to people that have said that these
are good options and that when they work they work.
