You are worried about the actual physical plastic SATA connectors going bad ?
You can do what we do in audio. When we have devices that we need to keep
plugging/unplugging and we rreeeaalllyyy do not want to, we attach a tiny
high quality extention cable of a few inches to the device and spend our time
connecting reconnecting to the extension cable.
This violates "the least number of interconnects" principle (whatever its
called), but in this case your friend could easily run performance diagnostic
tools before and after to ensure there wasn't any real degradation of
performance.
