I've missed a substantial part of this thread, but I believe my basic
question went unanswered.

"Can you run their specified platform and show them that it still
doesn't work with the data set you're using?  They might be much more
interested in fixing it then..."

It really could be a Linux-specific issue, since Java people obviously
don't understand UNIX.
