You can just take it, but it cost (back when I took it) $120 for each of
the two exams, so you don't want to fail.  The LPIC level 1 is not
terribly difficult for an experienced Linux person, but you will want to
look over the topics that the test covers at LPI.org.  I used "Linux
certification in a nutshell" from Oreilly to prepare:
