I'd love to be proved wrong, but you're up against three things here:

  1) People and positions who go way back with each other.

  2) Each side of the debate considers the other soft (either in the
     spine or the brain or both).

  3) This is leaning heavily toward social matters rather than tech.

I meant you're "new" to the list (right?).  Trust me, when it comes to 
9/11 and related, you haven't missed anything worth watching again.  The 
one thing I'll say about all that was a number of people had ideas about 
using Linux and Free Software to aid in relief and rescue efforts.  The 
immediate aftermath of an attack is the wrong time to be complaining 
about the use of closed-source, proprietary solutions.  Nothing's been 
said since however, and if anyone would like to re-examine that, it 
might make a nice community project(s).
