Hmm. Ironically, the EDGE connection to my cell phone is mostly free 
($15/month), but is also very slow. Longer messages also either clog my 
small memory card, or mean that I have to deal with Symbian-hell to 
delete them. Ergo, long messages make me cranky and I long for T-Mobile 
to actually roll out their 3G and Android/Google phones.

So I'd say that trimming is still a good thing, at least for some of us. 
And that's not getting into the readability issues.
