   Yeah, I've had this problem even when the back-end _wasn't_ Exchange.  Even 
with a Unix mailer back-end like Sendmail, Postfix, Exim4, etc, Outlook users 
are able to send each other calendar entries, tasks, etc, and then sync them 
with their mobile device.  A while back I got caught up in a less than 
half-hearted attempt at migrating to Novell GroupWise, and we ran into a 
number of problems relating to syncing mobile devices at the time, so I know 
what you mean by "not pretty".

   Admittedly I liked it as a user, before I knew anything about the 
server-side of it.  Features are good when they work.  But there was a day or 
two of downtime about once a month, and that was annoying.
