Actually, Gregg, Beowulf (the w is pronounced as a v) was a Geat from an area that is now in southern Sweden. His fun and frolic with Grendel and Grendel's mom was in Denmark. No Anglo-Saxons were involved except as occasional supporting actors.
Yeah, I'm a history and literature geek as well as a Linux geek and anarchist gun nut.
If you want to see the Beowulf legend from a different viewpoint, the late Poul Anderson (mostly known as a science fiction writer, but he branched out in several directions) translated (and expanded some from other sources) _Hrolf Kraki's Saga_ which is about the Danish kings of that time. Probably out of print at the moment but the Strand (or Abebooks.com) should have it, Ballantine/Del Rey released at least two editions.
