They chose instead to gain dominance through illegal contracts forcing
OEMs to pay Microsoft for MSDOS whether the machine shipped with it or
not. I wanted to find a URL for that, but I've gotta run out the door,
maybe someone else can dig that up. It was during the Clinton
administration, and all they got a slap on the wrist for it. Business
and society will be paying for that for years to come still. At least
Bill Gates is giving his money away now, eh?

The ZX81 wasn't the first machine I programmed, that was an IBM 360/40
mainframe. But the 81 was the first machine I *owned* and that warm
fuzzy feeling was worth what I paid for it, even if the price was cut in
half a few weeks later when the Timex/Sinclair version came out.
