[nylug-talk] equipment available

Agreed, agreed with gusto.

I really hate that PCs are so KVM centric, it is so very limiting. Even
with todays 'modern' BIOS redirecting consoles to the tty is so poorly
implemented (in some cases anyway). A capture of the serial console is a
superior way to manage a system. In PCs it's not more than an after
thought. Imagine being able to configure a system BIOS with a simple
command line, not one of these annoying menu systems, or even the
'web-config' or some such garbage that you find in the mega-raid cards.

Add to your list of benefits, the Lights-Out-Management (LOM). While LOM
is not available on these older desktop systems, it is a great advantage
to Sun server systems. With LOM you can power a system on and off via
the serial console. There are additional features of LOM as well, such
as reset, logs and system identification. No need for special add-in
cards or power strips (PDUs) and you get complete control of a system.

Can you tell that this struck a chord in me?

Sorry for the rant.
