Yeah, I'm referring to the Adv Server management software.
I remember it being binary only and built for specific distros, which sucks
when you want to use something like debian. Secondly, being a packager I
have a general rule of never trusting RPMs provided by commercial vendors. I
have yet to see this rule be proven wrong. I remember looking at the
scriptlets that are run pre-install, post-install, etc and I remember being
fairly disgusted. Its been ages so i don't remember much but I will ALWAYS
remember seeing the command
rm -rf /opt/compaq
in the post-uninstall scriptlet. Not only does this assume that you have
nothing else installed by compaq, but it also shows a gross lack of
understanding about what a package management system does in the first place.
I remember being so disgusted I recreated the RPM to something not offensive.
Maybe they've fixed this, maybe they haven't. But my rule still stands:
Never trust commercial RPMs (or any package if you can help it.)
And I for one do not believe that basic server management functionality such
as fan speed control should be only manageable via software.
