dont confuse openness of carriers vs quality of standards themselves

gsm is the suck, as far as frequency reuse and bit density per mhz go. 
(gsm = tdma, like amps/namps). the only reason euros are all gsm is 
because it was illegal for 10 years to run anything non-gsm
