His provider doesn't have to support anything for the phone to work.
I bought an "unsupported" unlocked phone for use with T-mobile. It is a
standard GSM phone, and all functions Just Work once configured
correctly for my operator. This is how it is supposed to be, at least
for GSM.
This is what Verizon is going to court to prevent for the 700 mhz
spectrum coming up for auction (and how all mobile spectrum works today
AFAIK - T-mobile happens to be more "open" than most. In fact, T-Mobile
will even give you a 'subsidy' for unsupported phones in certain
conditions, but this is really OT).
Trying to use a 3rd party phone on Sprint, today, would be a different
story.
