Why don't you know. Check the log on your linux box if it requests a ip
address and also check the system preference app/network if the mac is
set to dhcp and if it gets the address.

That actually sounds like the settings of the mac are not set to dhcp.
In this case the mac does this zeroconf (bonjour) configuration thing
for the connected interfaces
