Yep, agreed.

For some things, sometimes its better to find precompiled packages (MySQL 
and/or PHP is a good example here).

Yeah, but I get attachments in corporate email that don't open in vi :-)

So far, Ive gotten away with not having to install any M$ software at all.

Nope and for most people its overkill. You're better off with Pixelmator 
(if you dont mind paying $59).
