Thats a question I remember having.  The Mac has a different
approach to maximizing windows. It "resizes to content".  Really,
it depends on the app (how the app hints to the OS what the maximum
size of its content is), but some Apps, such as iTerm or Preview
(the default PDF reader), will only "maximize" to the largest area of their
displayed content.  While others, such as Opera or Microsoft Office
for Mac OS will maximize full-screen the way you expect.  So the
answer is, really, it depends on the app.  For those that don't
maximize the expected way, you manually resize to it your taste.
