Maybe you're looking to build your open source software on the Mac?
Try MacPorts or Fink:
http://finkproject.org/
http://www.macports.org/
Fink gives you a Debian style repo and management system for installing
software.
And MacPorts gives you a BSD Ports style way.
(I prefer MacPorts myself.)
Now, the Mac comes with a Terminal, which you can access by popping up your
Finder
(the smiley face guy), and going to Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal
However, there is a better terminal (imho) in iTerm:

There are plenty of us here on NYLUG who can help you out with Mac-related
issues.
