using free, open-source software in the future is appealing to me. I also
like the idea of making use of the oft-purported stability of Linux as a
server.
I have never learned anything about computing formally. I have an
international affairs degree and taught geography. Everything I have learned
- probably little by the standards of the people participating in this list
- has been self taught. What's different now is that I would like to take
the learning to a level by which I can actually do the work for a living
because I find it more satisfying than other types of work I have done.
I have installed openSUSE 10.3 (saw a SUSE box at Best Buy, then went to the
web site). I am interested primarily in LAMP work, but also in the issues of
improving the user experience to the point that my wife is comfortable using
Linux for daily desktop computing. I also want to be well enough grounded in
administration tasks to make good use of other possibilities Linux has to
offer - not just to trudge through it like when I had to find my way through
the UNIX system at the University of Hamburg ten years ago.
Once again, thank you, especially to those of you who were kind enough to
offer off-list guidance. I look forward to reading and sometimes
participating in the technical discussion here.

But Garreth's not looking for formal education, and formal education is
not a training course.

Just to be fair to the employer, I wouldn't be expecting to make 150k
after coming out of a training course having learnt something totally
new to me.
