Correction: this seems to be the current project website:

http://yakuake.kde.org/

Original message:

I was in the same boat (Konsole) when I discovered Yakuake
(http://yakuake.uv.ro/). It's a "Quake-style" terminal emulator that
uses the same KParts as Konsole. (Don't ask me to elaborate
on "Quake-style," I don't know what the game looks like - just quoting
from the project website.)

It runs in the background and you can bring the app in with a hotkey
(F12 is the default). I found it to be a huge productivity boost.
Available in most distributions.
