Peter,

Thanks SO MUCH for the detailed review of the question.  There are two
interesting things coming into play here, in my quest for the fastest
MySQL backups:

1) msyqldump accepts the option -r to indicate the output file.  I'd
assume that your notes about the app simply freeing memory are part of
the equation here.  I'm going to try piping it's output.

2) mysqlhotcopy is ALSO copying the index files.  That's a lot of data
compared to simply the SQL definition of the index,
