Jay, Microsoft does not pay Dell (or anybody else) to install their OS. They give them a price break for volume and easy install media if the vendor cooperates. The vendors of the add-on crap (yes, Office and/or Works which is a branch of Microsoft admittedly, Intuit, lots of gaming stuff) do pay and they pay well in the hope that the customers will cough up the cash for the full-feature versions (I assume that works, though I note some vendors that used to offer such demos are no longer with us). If the Microsoft OS side felt a need to destroy GNU/Linux, contracting hits on Linus and RMS would be a lot cheaper. Trust me, I know a couple of guys in Jersey City who are hurting for work.

The reason folks don't think of installing Windows as a painful experience is roughly the same reason men don't think of childbirth as a painful experience. Mike, http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/03/30/letters_3003/
