Funny, I'm leaving Gentoo. Will be migrating most machines here (about 
10) off of Gentoo.

Why? I find portage becoming kind of crusty - it isn't as reliable as it 
used to be. Robbins leaving really hurt the distro, and it hasn't 
recovered yet.

The first Linux distro that I ever tried was Debian, and I hated it. 
Much to my surprise, we're going to be moving to either Debian or Ubuntu 
server - the one machine I set up on Edgy was a nice experience, 
frankly. apt-get seems to work well, although it isn't as flexible as 
Portage. Debian unstable might be an even better fit.
