In the case of turbo tax, I would see the software being Free, and verified 
tax law updates (along with protection from the IRS, as offered by the 
company IIRC) being in a subscription service.  Value-adds.

Also, I've used (and had great luck) with the online tax companies.  Been 
doing it for a few years no, no problems.
