Hi Gary,
I think the Edubuntu recommendation "wdg3rd at comcast.net" is a good start.
You should consider a few things. First Edubuntu comes in two current
flavorers 6.06 and 7.04, each has it's own pros and cons.
6.06 Pros
Very, very stable! Everything works beautifully.
All the children applications pre-install from one CD.
Will install and run on a P133mhz 128MB RAM 2GB HD
Run faster after you tweak it.
7.04 PROS
7.04 Installation CD is also a boot CD
-You can see if all your hardware would be supported or not.
Will install on a PII 350Mhz 128MB Ram 4GB HD
Runs faster after tweaking
Has the newest versions of all the software available
It can run Beryl on 800Mhz 256MB Ram 16MB Video Card
Child friendly icons.
A bit easier to configure and tweak than 6.06
Newer Firefox
6.06 CONS
6.06 is not a boot CD, you cannot see if it would detect your hardware
before hand
You have to tweak it to run modestly faster.
You have to remember to pick install workstation or else it install as
a server.
Tweaking can take a while
7.04 CONS
Depending on the software you install, you could make it a bit unstable
The update manage has a memory leak (I've had it freez once or twice
Boot up can take long unless you tweak it
Does not install all the educational software (requiers second CD)
depending on the machine you would have to make a choice between
6.06 and 7.04. Because Edubuntu 7.04 need a second CD to
install the rest of the software you could go with Ubuntu 7.04 an install
from the net. But you would not have the kool Icons.
If you need any more help, you could consider volunteering you time
with the Community Free Software Group, Inc.
( http://cfsg.org or http://dev.cfsg.org) and you could learn a lot more
about Ubuntu and Free Software appliacations.
