And this has almost nothing to do with the underlying technology, only
with the care that's gone into selecting the components. BTW, .5
seconds is forever in serious computing-land. What in the world makes
you think that a software RAID1 would have any time cost?

Yes, it would, wouldn't it? I think the place with the most research
along these lines right now would be sun since they're pimping out ZFS
for the masses. Look at their comparisons.
