Unfortunately the data that I've seen shows that the listed MTBF ratings
are optimistic [not that that's any surprise], and that SCSI disks may not be
much more reliable than SATA disks.

I beg to differ, we run an Adaptec SAN with SATA drives, we have at
least one drive that needs to be replaced every quarter (per the
admin who worked here before me.)
Additionally, SCSI drives are more hearty if the SAN is shutdown
improperly (my experience.)
Yes there is a trade off between reliability and capacity with no
way around that.
For us, we run the SATA SAN in development and production gets
SCSI.
