   A while back I had a similar problem with a 3Com 905 network card, where 
the Linux driver worked just fine /unless/ I had first booted into Windows 
first -- if Windows was booted first, the network card acted like it was dead 
(except that the link lights worked) and there were no error messages from 
the Linux driver.  I had set the connect speed to 100Mb for the Windows 
driver, but had not done the same for the Linux kernel module.  IIRC, 
changing the connect speed to "auto" in the Windows driver fixed the issue.

   It sounds like you may have found your issue, but I wanted to point out 
that there are other problems that can show similar symptoms.
