Since I doubt that the Xandros GUI utlity requires the full power of the ATI
video card, why
don't you try running X with a much more conservative configuration?  Like
perhaps using
just the plain VESA driver, while running your screen at something like 8x6?
Did you check whether utilites like "xorgconfig" are available to you?

Or, alternatively, since this is Debian based, how about you try installing
"xdebconfigurator"
to generate a default configuration for you?
