XMMS has been gone from Gentoo for a while now.

The media player that most resembles XMMS is Audacious. It uses GTK2, 
but it's not as rock-solid as XMMS used to be. I don't use it anymore 
though because the developers are jerks.

There are a lot of other options out there depending on the approach you 
want to take to your music. There is MPD with a client/server model, and 
iTunes style players like Rhythmbox and Amarok. I chose Amarok and I'm 
pretty happy with it, even though it's pretty KDE heavy.
