In case this hasn't become clear (Eric's post is pretty clear, but I
want to make it crystal clear).

The default kernel does not have the driver.

If you do not install madwifi, either using a cookbook package or by
rolling your own, you do not have the driver.

On your other system, the installer identified the PCI or other
identifying info and got the appopriate package. On this system, you
need to install the driver so you can use it.
