There are plenty of OSS projects looking for people to help out.  Just
pick something that you use, but is missing a feature (or is too slow,
or has a bug, etc.) grab the source and fix the problem.  Another way
to get involved is to update the documentation.  That's a good, safe,
way to start.  Then once you have the ability to check in new files,
you can get involved with code-oriented changes.
