I think most people would agree that it's probably a better use of your 
time to find a project you're interested in, get the source, work on 
some improvements or bugs, and work your way up from contributor to 
developer. What sorts of things are you interested in?

Alternately, if you already have an idea in mind for a personal project 
you want to contribute to the OSS world, you can work on that, but it 
can be hard to get a project out there and find people to help 
contribute and develop it.
