In addition to all the other good suggetions, there is a great place in 
Midtown: on the north side of 39th street betwen 5th and 6th, slightly 
closer to 5th.  I don't remember the name but they have everything in 
stock and they have a good workshop in the back where they will test 
component-by-component.
