I don't know how much effort you want to put into a distro hunt, but
Vector, based on Slackware, supposedly does pretty well on less
hardware. I haven't used it on old hardware, but it's a pretty
reasonable install if you're even the least bit used to Slackware.
As for CJK input, the one caveat is that you should choose gimp during
the choice of packages during installation.
Then, you can, following that page of mine I mentioned, easily install
anthy, scim and scim-anthy from source. Grab the Japanese fonts I
mention on the page and you're set.
