Finally I decided to go with ubuntu, which seems to be nice enough, and 
got me everything I wanted.  But the machine is running very slow -- 
even with IceWM running in place of xfce.  Processor pegs out just 
loading simple web sites.  Not sure why, though, if you report 
reletively decent operation w/ KDE.  Bummer. Looks like I'll have to 
look for better hardware.
