[nylug-talk] fsck chestnut

1. the data on this HD is backed up regularly so we're ok there.
2. was really hoping there was a preferred solution beyond the obvious fsck
off a live cd, which just doesn't seem like it should be the best way, we
did try it and we got:
3. running fsck -rf from the live cd says its clean, except for 1.7%
noncontiguous files.
clearly of course its not a clean HD, according to dmesg, so what's our next
step to maintaining this system?
4. Tried Alex's suggestion (boot into single) which sounded more like what
we were looking for, but, after booting into single mode ("root=/hda1 ro
single") and then trying to fsck the drive,
it still complains that its mounted (which of course it is, just read-only)
not sure exactly how to fsck this drive from single user mode, obviously it
has to be mounted to run, even in single user.
data is safe, but we seem to be missing an obvious step in fixing the
filesystem.
appreciatively,
Matt
