No, they just often lead quiet miserable lives instead, they just dont

Very true - unfortunately this is something I have experienced myself.

Plenty of politics and back-stabbing in academia too, Not sure which is 
worse: a lot of stress but making good money in a financial company, or 
struggling to make ends meet on an academic salary (which in itself is 
stressful in a different way ;-)

When things got really bad after 9/11 I often felt it might be better to 
go work on a farm. ;-)
