Actually, I did that already.  I was in the IBEW (not Local 3, but it 
was a chapter in NY), and started as a first year apprentice.

And I quit after the first year.

No, I'm not a "girly girl", I didn't quit because it was "too hard".  
Yes, I can pull my weight on a jobsite (when given the chance).  But I 
did learn one thing, no amount of money is worth totally hating your 
job.  (Read: General foreman that like to make the lives of those with 
matching X-chromosomes hell.)  I'll take my current <$35k/year over the 
union's $100k any day, hands down.
