What you need is:
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
Alternately (the lazy way that works), boot Knoppix and
copy /etc/X11/xorg.conf to your hard disk, overwriting the original
(after you make a copy, of course, but since yours doesn't work to
start with...)
This should get you going at least with a frame buffer (depending on
what Knoppix detects).
