I have cablevision, and it has been unbelievably solid. Maybe one
or two hiccups a year, over the last 3 years (but this is for 
western Suffolk county, not Brooklyn).

I do have a Linksys wired router (BEFSR81) between the cable modem and
my boxes (including Ubuntu and Windows boxen). About $85 from Amazon
with free shipping. I don't know if this is true of the current
version, but a really nice feature of this router is something of
a command line interface, and SNMP support so you can monitor your
bandwidth utilization with MRTG.
