VIA/S3 offers a somewhat compelling standalone solution, although not 
one that seems to have OSS drivers.

The point I'm making: VIA did release OSS drivers for the integrated 
stuff, but seems to have been ignored. So many folks claiming to want 
decent graphics with OSS drivers, but when it was proffered, even in a 
half-assed way, it was ignored in favor of closed stuff. At least, 
that's how it appears to me - but I'm sure that there was more to it.
