grep EE /var/log/X*
Poke around in there, anyway. EE is errors, and WW is warnings, so it's
easy to grep. Can't remember what the XFree log is called, but x.org
is Xorg.0.log or something. If it's not starting at all, you'll
probably have some errors right at the end of that file.

Yep. But you've already backed up everything critical, haven't you, so
you don't have to worry about anything dying, now or in the near
