Generally speaking, you're going to find the best prices and
availability online. Newegg (www.newegg.com) is notable as they have
shipping locations all over the east coast; you can definitely get stuff
quickly from them. You won't find anything "funky" in the stores - no
really cool cases, no good raid controllers, no notebooks that aren't
Lenovo/Toshiba/Acer/HP mainstream, nothing even remotely exotic.
That being said:
Parts:
http://www.datavis.com - not the best selection, but they have cases,
motherboards, pretty much everything that you need to build a PC, and
they have some "weird stuff", too. Terrible return policy, but that's
for pretty much everyone outside of online.
Don't buy the notebook here :)
Parts and Notebooks:
http://www.jandr.com - haven't bought parts from them, but they seem to
have a fairly huge selection (you can check it out online - not sure if
they have in-store pickup, they might). They also do notebooks, and
their prices aren't bad (not as good as online, save for the occasional
special).
Avoid: CompUSA!! At all costs!!! I find buying anything there to be
expensive, frustrating, time consuming. My $.02.
If you do a search on the NYLUG archive, you'll find a lot more
suggestions, I'm certain. Good luck.
