Hi Ron
I current work as a sysadmin for another high school (Bronx Science) :)
I've never heard of Moodle till now, but it looks like nice stuff.
In terms of equipment and software, I don't think you'll have much to
worry about. However I think your biggest costs/hurdle associated with
this project will be teaching teachers how to utilize this software.
At my high school we use 3rd party commercial solutions like Naviance
and SchoolPages. And while these solutions are hosted by the providers
offsite, it takes real time and effort by the MIS Dept. and various
Tech teachers to teach others about the software and how to use it.
I believe we use part of staff development days in an effort to spread
knowledge about the software all at once. But the most amount of staff
time is spent with teachers who are not tech-savvy and don't learn too
fast, but have a real desire to use the tools in the class room.
(I'm not entirely too sure of the details, as I don't deal with this
aspect of IT at my school. But if you want I can put your in touch
with my supervisor and our AP of MIS, they deal with this stuff daily!)
Cool
