[nylug-talk] RE: nylug-talk Digest, Vol 34, Issue 27

Hi Mr. Wolsky,

I am not sure whether NYLUG has completed the paperwork required to establish their 501(c)3 status. Hopefully that shouldn't be a barrier to people here providing you some guidance on what you're attempting to accomplish...

I just checked out the moodle site and, best as I can tell after about 2 minutes looking around is that it's a LAMP (linux, apache, mysql php) based web-content management system specifically designed to meet the requirements for a course management system...

All you need to get this thing going is:

1) a server... this could be your own server connected to the Internet via an ISP that allows you to run a server (such as Speakeasy), a shared server at a hosting company like GoDaddy, a hosted server at someplace like RackSpace, a server at your school's data center, or even a co-located server at Pilosoft or another colo facility.

Depending on how much action you expect your site to get you'll want to provision the hardware and the bandwidth appropriately so the site performs with reasonable speed...

Basically, moodle is a highly active, well supported free, open source software project based on LAMP. I could run it on my laptop here and probably provide service for my daughter's entire middle school here in Irvington, NY... but if some component on my laptop failed then there'd be some downtime...

most likely, for a serious project I'd recommend specifying hosting it on a server (owned, colocoated, hosted, etc..) that has multiple points of failure (dual power supplies, several drives, in a RAID configuration with hardware RAID... and make sure it's backed up regularly)...

If you really want help specifying this all I guess I'll be happy to help you out.. just send me the particulars of the project you're planning and I'll help with the more technical bits...

Of course, you'll want to make sure you have access to SOME tech-savvy person to worry about the hosting environment for moodle (unless that comes with the hosting package) and you'll want someone to spend time committed to becoming the application administrator for the moodle implementation itself...

I should add.. NYLUG is a wonderful organization... unfortunately, having posted just this evening you're getting rather short notice about tomorrow's meeting.. of course, if you can come, you should, but don't consider that a condition of getting assistance or advice on your project from the people here.

:-)

Cheers,

Joshua

I am a NYC High School teacher. I write grants for my school and I am
currently putting together the idea for a technology grant that includes
Linux.
I would like to set up a web server using Linux OS and running MOODLE.
MOODLE is a program that allows teachers to put up interactive online class
projects (see moodle.org for more information).
I was wondering if anyone belonging to this listserv would like to help me
put this project together. I must figure out what I will need in terms of
equipment, software, technical support etc.
Does NYLUG have 501{c3} status as a non-profit?

Ron

                        (volunteer meeting)

  This month, instead of reaching out to the world, we're going to
  turn our focus inward. Not since November 2000, has there been a
  gathering of NYLUG about NYLUG. This month we're going to do it
  twice! Last held in November 2000, these meetings will be an
  opportunity to give your input, creativity, and effort to the
  group, and help shape its future direction.

    * Kind of meetings/events NYLUG holds
    * Events NYLUG attends
    * Updating the NYLUG logo
    * The new NYLUG web site
    * RSVP software
    * Job listings software
    * Any other ideas

  Our first word in January 1999 was fittingly, "Hello" and we've
  gotten together at least once in each of the last eighty-eight
  months. Your help will make the next eighty-eight even better than
  the first eighty-eight.

  First, please join us this month at 6:30pm at the Winter Garden at
  the World Financial Center, to discuss various projects and ideas
  about NYLUG. We'll be meeting directly at the tables in the Winter
  Garden, or outside at the corner of Park Place and Broadway at
  6:20pm.

  We are also seeking volunteers for three new coordinator teams:

    * Web team (graphics, content, coding)
    * Publicity team (announcements, flyers, etc.)
    * Media team (meeting videos, photos, audio, streaming)

  Afterward, around 7:30pm, we will migrate somewhere for dinner.
  (suggestions to info at nylug.org )

  Meeting Dates: May 25, 2006 from 6:30pm to 7:30pm
                 May 30, 2006 from 6:30pm to 7:30pm
