You get what you pay for, for free you might be able to get access from
unsecure APs in 90% of the area.
You want EVDO if you want wireless that actually works everywhere. VZW, I
think is better than sprint for evdo.

The current favorite for phone/pda combo appears to be HTC Wizard platform
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTC_Wizard). sidekick is b-game (too big).
blackberry is an option, but I do not like the form factor. Motorola Q is
getting very mixed reviews.
{and spare me the "but HTC runs wince". sure it does. and its very usable}
